Q: Who are you?
A: Hi! I’m Kerry Wells. I love food. I’ve been so obsessed with food my entire life that I finally decided to launch a website – and now a business – to help people lose weight.
Q: Aha. So you’re a nutritionist?
A: In Arizona, there is no credential required to call oneself a “nutritionist”. I could call myself one, but that doesn’t tell you anything about my qualifications and education level. I completed a Certification in Food, Health, and Nutrition from the University of Washington. Go PAC12! As for my education, I also have a BS in Supply Chain Management and an MBA from ASU, but those courses of study involved almost no bacon.
Q: Does that make you a dietician?
A: No. To be a dietician requires a bachelor’s degree consisting of course work accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program at a health-care facility, community agency, or a food service corporation combined with college studies, and passage of a national exam.
Q: Well why aren’t you a dietician?
A: I have completed all courses except the practice program courses (kinda like an internship) and one in-person course towards the Dietetic Technician registration. Food is my obsession, but I have a day job. Until there’s an option for me to complete an internship and all coursework on nights and weekends, you can’t call me a dietician. You’ll just have to call me Kerry.
Q: How can you understand people’s struggle with weight loss? You’re not overweight.
A: I’m putting this here with intended sarcasm because I do get this question. A lot. There are plenty of people who know about weight loss who aren’t overweight. However, it comforts people to know that at my heaviest, I carried 60 more pounds than I do today. It has been gone for 10 years.
Q: You’re only thin because you exercise.
A: Now that’s not even a question! But I do hear that a lot. And I do exercise…a lot! However, if I may quote celebrity fitness trainer Vinnie Tortorich: “Exercise is a terrible way to lose weight”. If I can quote myself: “I trained for and completed the Ironman Triathlon and weighed the same on day one of training as I did the day after the race.” I love exercise, but a lack of it is not why people struggle to lose weight.
Q: How are your plans for weight loss different than all the others?
A: Because I keep it simple. I don’t count. Not macros. Not calories. I don’t recommend milk shakes as meals. I don’t think one of my meal plans will raise your grocery bill. And I won’t make you exercise.
(But you really should exercise. I just won’t make you.).
